Hungering for More (part 1 of 2)

Certainly, there was hunger. It washed over her carapace and amplified with every growl. Scamp had no intention of denying herself the feast that she knew was coming. She would not be caged next to all the others and then left to simply die. She was no fool, and quickly diagnosed the purpose of her prison.  The three other beasts, in their cages surrounding her own, snarled and howled; however, their hunger could not match Scamp’s. She was the first captive and had seen the others being forced into their cells. They could not match her rage, and she was hungry for flesh.

“Alright, ya bastards,” said a halfling as he slid open a heavy door. “Time to eat.” He was a devil, and Scamp wished that she could reach him and rend him with her powerful claws; however, she knew that this was not the time. Not yet.

The sun shining in blinded Scamp for a few moments. It took a while for the creature to see her intended meal. It was a halfling; she could see that easily enough. As her eyes adjusted more, she realized that it was a female. She longed to smell her, but was overwhelmed by the pungent odor of her fellow captives.

With a click, the manacles fell from the prisoners wrists.  The others rushed to the doors of their cages, as if they could somehow reach the bound and helpless halfling. Scamp slowly reached down and retrieved the chained cuffs; she would need it for the spotted one.

For a moment, she considered what race her fellow prisoners might be. She assumed they were probably human, since humans were the race which most suffered the runts to live. They liked to believe that their “acceptance” somehow made them more advanced than the other races. However, that acceptance was more closely likened to tolerance and that tolerance would one day run its course. It was a fleeting thought; when a creature was born a runt, caught in some horrific hybrid state, then “runt” became their race. It mattered not that troll blood coursed proudly through Scamp’s veins. She was born a runt and that is the only way the world would ever view her.
